Phantom Singer All Stars: Crossover music festival

Round 1. For those in need of comfort

Recently, jtbc has begun to air a TV show "Phantom Singer All Stars" in which 9 quartets that had competed in the final competitions of Phantom Singer 1-3 get together and perform. They are expected to perform in various forms in this show. As of today (Feb. 8), they completed the first round of competition, resulting in Miraclass, the runner-up in season 2, winning a trophy.

The producing team of the show promotes the idea that this show is a festival disguised as competition. It is true in a sense that this is a festival because no one gets eliminated. It is also true that this is competition because people are invited to score performances of the 9 teams: Nine celebrities are invited into the recording hall and evaluate each performance by giving a star. A number of ordinary people are also invited online to evaluate the performance. The nine teams themselves select their own favorites as well. All of these scores obtained from the three groups (celebrities, citizens, the 9 quartets) were added up in the first round. Miraclass turned out to be the first winning team.

La Poem sang BREATHE (한숨) originally sung by Lee, Hi. Their performance brought tears to some people. It was quite daring for La Poem to sing this song because it requires very controlled and delicate techniques. What's more was members' voice conditions weren't ideal on that day. Although their performance score was not as high as we La Views hoped for, many people found their song moving and comforting.

The song BREATHE is composed and written by the late Jonghyun who used to be a member of the K-pop group SHINee. He took his life on Dec. 18, 2017. His death shocked the entertainment world of Korea, raising social awareness of the brutal competitiveness of the entertainment business and the importance of mental health.

The lyrics of the song seem to reflect what Jonghyun may have tried to say to himself or would have wanted others to say to him.

Here are the lyrics:
[verse]
숨을 크게 쉬어봐요 | take a deep breath
당신의 가슴 양쪽이 저리게 | until both sides of your chest get numb
조금은 아파올 때까지 | until it hurts a little
숨을 더 뱉어봐요 | breathe out even more
당신의 안에 남은 게 없다고 느껴질 때까지 | until you feel nothing left inside

[refrain]
숨이 벅차올라도 괜찮아요 | it's okay to run out of breath
아무도 그댈 탓하진 않아 | no one blames you
가끔은 실수해도 돼 | it's okay to make mistakes sometimes
누구든 그랬으니까 | everybody does it
괜찮다는 말 | saying "it's okay"
말뿐인 위로지만 | it's just words of consolation, though

[chorus]
누군가의 한숨 | someone's deep breathing
그 무거운 숨을 | the heavy breathing
내가 어떻게 헤아릴 수가 있을까요 | how can I see it through
당신의 한숨 | your deep breathing
그 깊일 이해할 순 없겠지만 | I can't understand how deep it is
괜찮아요 | but it's okay.
내가 안아줄게요 | I'll give you a hug.

[refrain]
숨이 벅차올라도 괜찮아요 | it's okay to run out of breath
아무도 그댈 탓하진 않아 | no one blames you
가끔은 실수해도 돼 | it's okay to make mistakes sometimes
누구든 그랬으니까 | everybody does it
괜찮다는 말 | saying "it's okay"
말뿐인 위로지만 | it's just words of consolation, though

[chorus]
누군가의 한숨 | someone's deep breathing
그 무거운 숨을 | the heavy breathing
내가 어떻게 헤아릴 수가 있을까요 | how can I see it through
당신의 한숨 | your deep breathing
그 깊일 이해할 순 없겠지만 | I can't understand how deep it is
괜찮아요 | but it's okay.
내가 안아줄게요 | I'll give you a hug.

[bridge]
남들 눈엔 힘 빠지는 한숨으로 보일진 몰라도 | it may seem like an exhausting sigh to others
나는 알고 있죠 | I already know that
작은 한숨 내뱉기도 어려운 하루를 보냈단 걸 | your day was hard enough to even let a little sigh out.
이제 다른 생각은 마요 | now don't think about anything else
깊이 숨을 쉬어봐요 | take a deep breath
그대로 내뱉어요 | and let it all out

[chorus]
누군가의 한숨 | someone's deep breathing
그 무거운 숨을 | the heavy breathing
내가 어떻게 헤아릴 수가 있을까요 | how can I see it through
당신의 한숨 | your deep breathing
그 깊일 이해할 순 없겠지만 | I can't understand how deep it is
괜찮아요 | but it's okay.
내가 안아줄게요 | I'll give you a hug.

[outro]
정말 수고했어요 | you really did a good job.
