Phantom Singer All Stars: The best single representative

Round 3. Sunghoon representing La Poem rose to the throne.

In this round, a singer representing his team went up to stage and performed. Just as in the second round, two groups of people--celebrities on site and citizens online--evaluated performances of 9 singers.

As a representative of La Poem, Sunghoon Choi went up to the stage and performed, which turned out to be a very good strategy.

It is one thing that Sunghoon's voice type (i.e., countertenor) adds more flavors to La Poem's songs. Another thing, more important, is that his singing is so mesmerizing that you can't help but to listen to his singing. He can hold audience spellbound with his heavenly voice.

Sunghoon is also a good actor. His facial and body expressions precisely display emotions that the song conveys. He sometimes becomes a helpless man who seeks God's guidance but other times a wicked man who derides weakness of ordinary people. The spectrum of emotions that he displays through his singing and acting is astoundingly wide.

With these great qualities, Sunghoon sang "Io Ti Penso Amore" that David Garrett and Nichole Scherzinger performed for the movie The Devil's Violinist

Sunghoon's performance was much anticipated as his voice type and talent were already known to many of the audience. Moreover, his score was a matter of great interest because Eunsung Ko, a member of Hpresso from Phantom Singer 1, had defeated 5 challengers with the highest score 720 out of 1,000 up to that point.

Sunghoon showed a flawless performance, with some interesting twist added to the song. His voice type altered between the vocal tones of baritone and countertenor in the middle of the song, which made the audience both surprised and fascinated. A short appearance of a ballerina also highlighted the sentiment Sunghoon was delivering during the performance.

His performance was beautiful and rock-solid. Guess how high his score was. He received 829, defeating Eunsung Ko and rising to the throne. He kept his throne until all teams finished their songs. This means that an MVP trophy went to La Poem again--La Poem's second win in a row.

Sunghoon Choi is the gem of La Poem and the apple of La View's eye.

After Sunghoon's performance was over, he was asked why he picked that song to sing. He revealed that he underwent a major surgery before leaving for France to study. He chose the song because it reminded him of the tough time. The surgery left him unable to sing (and even breathe) no matter how much he wanted to. When he was letting go of the longing, chances were coming by. For him, a longing for love (the theme of the song) resembles the longing for singing he had during the difficult time.

* A La View whose nickname is Mi-sool-yeo-hang (미술여행) graciously agreed that I could use her paintings in this blog. In the two paintings, Sunghoon exudes different emotions, and Mi-sool-yeo-hang caught them very well. There are many talented La Views.

    1. He sounds different from other countertenors. His songs are weirdly comfortable to listen to.

  3. Same here. I always liked voices of bass or baritone at least. Sunghoon sounds more like a mezzo-soprano, but his range is more like a soprano. And yes, you're right, his songs are weirdly comfortable to listen to.
