Phantom Singer All Stars: Harmony of LaRaLe

Round 4. The Harmony of LaRaLe moved A Great Big World.

There was a shake-up in quartet membership in Round 4 (see the post published on March 1). Larale refers to the team of season 3, representing the first two letters of the names of three quartets La Poem, RabidAnce, and Letteamor.

A newly-made quartet named "ㄱ나니" (meaning "Do you remember?") consisted of countertenor Sunghoon Choi (La Poem), bass Paul Kim (Rabidance), tenor Minseok Kim and baritone Hyunsoo Park (Letteamor). Whether it was intentional or not, there were all possible vocal types in this quartet, raising a great expectation of their harmony.

Following a performance of Pain Killer (season 2), ㄱ나니 performed "You" composed and sung by Ian Axel of A Great Big World. Axel started to write this song when his wife was having his son Bowie. According to People, he was terrified and most excited at the same time. When the baby was finally born, Axel felt the presence of his son in his life every moment, being relieved with the idea that he didn't have to live without his son anymore. The magazine concludes with Axel's words "This song is for all the people out there who come into your life and change it forever."

ㄱ나니's performance was truly an artwork. The bridge Sunghoon and Paul (aka human cello) made with "Air on the G String" is particularly impressive. Following the bridge, I personally like the chorus part in which the voices of all singers, with Minseok and Hyunsoo having joined, were rising in a crescendo.

A Great Big World got to know this performance via someone's tweet. They retweeted this performance with a nice comment.

ㄱ나니's performance received the most votes from the audience, defeating the other quartets representing seasons 1 and 2.

Chaehoon was asked about ㄱ나니's performance. He said that "Sunghoon shines wherever he is. I'd like to have him in my team." Yes! Sunghoon is La Poem's younger brother. We are lucky to have him in La Poem.

  2. Honestly speaking, this was actually one of my favourite quartet performances from All Stars. It's a pity that it was not La Poem, but still very impressive.
Paul and Sunghoon's voices are mixed really well, as we already witnessed from their performance 'Becoming the wind'. Their own version of the 'Air on the G String' was breathtaking.
And yes, you are right! We are lucky to have Sunghoon in La Poem! ;)

    1. I agree with your assessment. I find this performance immaculate. The execution was really great. Ironically, the highest and lowest vocal singers meshed really well.
